Description

Lenz Old Vines Merlot is made from grapes grown in our oldest blocks, planted more than 30 years ago.  Our Old Vines Merlot shows classic merlot dark-fruit characters of black plums, black cherries and raspberries.  We reserve the Old Vines designation for exceptional vintages that exhibit great depth, complexity and aging potential.  These wines are special when we release them but continue to improve in the cellar for 20 years.

The 2010 Merlot Old Vines sees about two years in French oak, just a bit more new than on the others (20% new in the first year). It is sourced from 38-year-old vines. This takes the concentration level of the Estate 2013 and more or less doubles it. The structure is better, too, even while this is three years older. That’s not faint praise. This still seems younger, tighter and more powerful than the 2013. The intensity of flavor is impressive, too—it is not all about the zing and zest. As big as it is in some ways, it is still a wine with excellent finesse. It is wonderfully elegant and precisely crafted. This is pretty brilliant. It should age effortlessly, too. If it is not drinking well in 2035, I’ll be surprised.
