TASTING NOTES

2018 Estate Selection Malbec
Malbec is a very different variety than either merlot or cabernet; although merlot and cabernet differ, they have a lot in common, notably the presence of plums in their flavor profile (dominant in merlot, a component in cabs). Not so malbec. This can be a problem. What exactly does malbec taste like? We will get to that presently…..

Malbecs are food wines. And malbecs are dark in color. So too with this 2018. When tasting, the first thing you notice is the deep red-black color. And those flavors? Hard to characterize. Our tasters got ‘very dark cherry’, ‘pomegranate’, ‘black pepper’, ‘white pepper’, ‘blackberry’. Even strawberry. As for me, I am forever destined to find a flavor in malbec defined by our previous winemaker, Eric Fry, as ‘red banana’. Of course, there’s no such thing as a red banana. But if there was, I know just how it would taste.
